De Lotus Elan werd in 1962 voor het eerst geintroduceerd en was zowel als roadster als coupe (fixed head coupe alias FHC) leverbaar. Het model diende als opvolger van de Elite die niet zo’n beste reputatie had qua betrouwbaarheid. Het gedachtegoed van Colin Chapman, de directeur van Lotus, was om auto’s te bouwen met zo min mogelijk gewicht en zoveel mogelijk vermogen. Deze formule zou nog lang voortleven in de latere Lotus modellen en wordt vandaag de dag altijd nog bij Lotus toegepast. De Elan kwam helemaal tegemoet aan deze wens met een gewicht van 680kg en een krachtige 1.558cc door Lotus aangepaste viercilinder motor van Ford. Deze Lotus-Ford motor zou later in vele racewagens gebruikt worden.
Het bijzondere van de Elan was de combinatie van het stalen chassis en de polyester body. Alle wielen werden van schijfremmen voorzien en de onafhankelijke vering was zijn tijd op dat moment ver vooruit. In 1967 werd de Elan +2 geintroduceerd. De aanpassingen zaten met name in de langere wielbasis en de aanwezigheid van twee kleine zittingen achterin. De Elan zou tot 1975 in productie blijven. Men zegt dat er ongeveer 1.200 Elans wereldwijd zijn overgebleven. Daardoor heeft het model de status van gewilde klassieker bereikt.
Lotus Elan S3 FHC SE
Deze Lotus Elan S3 FHC SE uit 1967 wordt te koop aangeboden in Nederland door Van der Kooi Sportscars. De Lotus zou volledig body-off gerestaureerd zijn. In 1966 kwam Lotus met de benaming SE voor de S3 wat stond voor ‘Special Equipment’. Deze variant beschikte over meer vermogen en speciale lichtere velgen met centrale wielmoer. De S3 is in 2001 vanuit de USA naar Nederland gehaald waarna de restauratie is ingezet, dat zou met een groot oog voor detail zijn uitgevoerd, kosten noch moeite zijn daarbij bespaard waardoor dit waarschijnlijk één van de beste exemplaren is die ons land te bieden heeft. Men vraagt € 39.950 voor de lichtvoetige Brit.
